Statesman Cimon
Cimon
Athens
Statesman, General
c. 510 BC – c. 451 BC
Background
Like Pericles, Cimon also played a major part in building the Athenian empire after the Greco-Persian War. However, Cimon was adamant about trying to build a policy of friendship with Sparta and its people. Son of Miltiades and having origins from an aristocratic family, Cimon’s greatest victory was when he beat a Persian fleet in Pamphylia in 466 BC.
Peloponnesian War Contribution
Cimon contributed heavily in the First Peloponnesian War. It was Cimon who orchestrated a five-year truce with Sparta after Athens lost in Egypt and just prior to the rebellions that erupted across its empire.
