King
c. 382 BC – c. 336

Background
The 18th King of Macedon, King Philip II spread his influence through military and political genius throughout the 4th Century. King Philip II was not alive during the Peloponnesian Wars, but his kingship was affected by the turmoil throughout Greece left behind from Spartan rule. In 357 BC Philip would lead his newly trained Macedonian Army on Amphipolis and take it successfully from Athens. The next years would see rapid growth in Macedon’s power and territory, including the formation of the League of Corinth in 337 BC. King Philip unified much of Greece under a powerful Macedonian standard. In 336 BC, King Philip II would be assassinated and leave behind his powerful kingdom to his son and successor, Alexander III of Macedon, better recognized as Alexander the Great.
