       King Philip II's rise to power in Greece was no mere coincidence and neither was the war itself. Explained by Thucydides in his book History of the Peloponnesian War, Sparta, the established superpower, was threatened by the rising superpower of Athens which in turn made the war inevitable. From the destruction of Athens and Sparta made possible the rise of a third, separate power which would inevitably conquer both.

       A majority of Greeks, according to Thucydides, were tired of the constant war with their neighbors and sought something more. As Macedon grew its army from the rubble of the war that happened years prior, unifying Greece was easier than ever before under the promise of Greek unity, power, and resolve. Through Persia, the Greeks found a common enemy just as they had in the Greco-Persian War. And so reigned the Macedonian Empire from the rubble of Athens and Sparta...
